About Mwanza
Mwanza is located on the Southern shores of Lake Victoria in the Northern part of Tanzania. Mwanza has in the recent years been recognized as a city and is one of the fastest growing ones, with tall buildings being constructed for what was once a simple community.
Temperatures are very pleasant with a sweet breeze from the lake. The Mwanza Region is thriving with fishing industry, mining of gold and other precious stones. Cotton and fresh crops are grown in this fertile land.
The people live simple lives and most are very poor. The living conditions for some are improving as the city grows.
No one really knows how many people live in Mwanza, the population fluctuates throughout the year according to harvests, droughts and famines, but estimated numbers are around 3 million people with about the same number of males and females.
There are an equal number of Christians and Muslims with only 20% Hindus and others. The largest tribe is Sukuma and their land extends from Mwanza to Shinyanga and Tabora Regions.
There is a high death rate and many people contact tropical diseases like Malaria, Dysentery, Bilharzia, Tuburculosis, HIV, Hepatitis and others. In the year 2000 the life expectancy was approximately 50 years.
